THE KING OF THE MOON

Le Roi de la Lune - Donatien Mary & Bérengère Cournut - 23 x 31 cm - Hardback cover - 48 pages - April 2019 - €19

One evening, the King of the Moon, a little tyrant with a gigantic head, bursts into Anathilde’s bedroom. The monarch sweeps the young girl away on his space ship and off they go to the moon! Upon arrival, Anathilde discovers the Lunars, strange creatures busily sorting through the King of the Moon’s toy collection, stolen from children on planet Earth. Against her best intentions, Anathilde becomes the King of the Moon’s accomplice, and finds herself involved in a plot to steal a toy train from a sick child.

Bérengère Cournut and Donatien Mary unravel a story with twists and turns, following in the footsteps of children’s literary masterpieces such as Babar by Jean de Brunhoff, or aesthetically reminiscent of André Hellé’s illustrated stories.

Bérengère Cournut is an acclaimed French writer. Her first books mainly explored dreamlike territories. Since 2011, she regularly collaborates with Donatien Mary to invent universes where text and images dialogue in a facetious and poetic spirit (Palabres and Schasslamitt, Attila). In 2019 was published De pierre et d'os (Le Tripode) awarded by the “Prix du Roman Fnac 2019”.

Donatien Mary is a prolific designer, illustrator and engraver, graduated from the Ecole des Arts décoratifs de Strasbourg in 2007. He develops through his experiments a very unique universe (sometimes filled with dinosaurs, sailors and comets). Each project is built with a different approach, with a certain predilection for all engraving practices: etchings, aquatints, wood engravings, or linos.
