WHEN YOU'RE SCARED

N’aie pas peur — Andrée Poulin & Véronique Joffre — Hardcover book — 21.5 x 28.5 cm — 48 pages — September 2015 — CAN$20.95

A boy and his mother set up camp in the forest. They cross paths with a bear cub, who is stuck in a garbage bin, and his mother, who is trying in vain to free him. The protagonists are all scared, which they will have to overcome. With sparing text, the story allows readers to interpret the illustrations.

Andrée Poulin has published more than thirty books, which have earned her several literary distinctions. As a journalist, she first felt a great pleasure in telling true stories. Now, as an author, she takes great pleasure in inventing some. She creates stories that stimulate the mind and touch the heart, books that make both laugh and think.

Based in London since 2008, Véronique Joffre is a French illustrator. She graduated from École Estienne (Paris, 2003) and from the Decorative Arts School in Strasbourg (2006). Her singular collages are overflowing with softness and poetry. Her picture books and works were published by Bayard, Flammarion, La Martinière, Gallimard, Thierry Magnier, Milan, Syros, Rue du monde and XXI magazine, to name but a few.

“With sparse text, [Andrée Poulin] conveys a range of emotions and tells a touching story. Repetition conveys the idea that despite different contexts, people and animals can feel the same thing.”

– Pierre-Alexandre Bonin – Campagne pour la lecture

“Playing with colour and texture, the illustrations on a white background admirably support the visual narration in the book.”

– Louisanne Lethiecq –J’enseigne avec la littérature jeunesse

“With virtually no words, the book is easily understood with its clean, crisp drawings, combining felt pen and paper cutouts. The effect is a pleasure to look at and intentionally imperfect, completely in line with the ruggedness of nature and the two massive bears.”

– Sophie Pilaire – Ricochet
